Quarter 3
Reading
Building reading stamina!!!
Increasing reading fluency and accuracy end of year benchmark is 120 wcpm
Using comprehension strategies to better understand what we read
In reading, the students will begin their Informational Reading Unit. The students will use information gained from illustrations (e.g. maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g. where, when, why and how key events occur). The students will also use text features and the words in the text to better understand the information presented in various books on a particular topic. They will use a variety of strategies to support their accuracy and comprehension: decoding and determining the meaning of mult-syllable words with affixes and self-monitor their own reading by rereading when comprehension is lost.

Writing
Establishing ideas for our writing
Readable print handwriting, Learning cursive handwriting
Writing complete sentences with correct punctuation, capitalization
Organizing our writing effectively
The students will begin their Informational Writing Unit.
During this unit the students will:
Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly, introduce a topic and group related information together, and include illustrations when useful to aid comprehension

Math
The students will continue with their Area and Perimeter Unit:
During the graphing unit the students will:
Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement. Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition
Measure areas by counting unit squares (square cm, square m,square in, square ft., and improvised units.
Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.

Science
The students will begin working on their Changes Unit in Science. The "Big Idea" of this unit is Matter can change with the application of heat, cold, mixing or chemical reactions.
During this unit the students will:
Understand properties of solids and liquids and the changes they undergo
Give examples of matter that change from a solid to a liquid and from a liquid to a solid by heating and cooling
Understand the structure and properties of matter before and after they undergo a change
Summarize changes that occur to the observable properties of materials when different degrees of heat are applied to them.
Recognize how energy can be transferred from one object to another.

Social Studies
The students will begin working on their Geography, Environment and Culture Unit in Social
Studies.
During this unit the students will:
Find absolute and relative locations of places within the local community and region.
Compare the human and physical characteristics of places.
Exemplify how people adapt to, change and protect the environment to meet their needs.
Explain how the movement of goods, people and ideas impact the community.
Summarize the elements (cultural, demographic, economic and geographic) that define regions (community, state, nation and world)
Compare various regions according to their characteristics
